Question by smilesandponytails: How did geography affect the development of asian cultures?

How did the geography of China, Japan, and Korea influence the development of each culture?

This isn't in my history book, but we have to do this in a unit review packet. Thanks for the help!

Japan... Island nation that was able to effectively seal off its borders to the outside whenever it wanted, and thus the Japanese always had political control over their own nation, and control what they adopted (Chinese script/Kanji and rice and Buddhism) and what they didn't want (Western domination and Christianity).

Korea... peninsula that is relatively easy to invade and has many natural harbors on its west side thus allowing Chinese cultural contacts to easily diffuse in, bringing Buddhism, architectural styles, and other such goods

China... massive flat plains with the Yangtze and Yellow rivers. Allowed for easy political control over great stretches of territory especially in the northern part of the country. Southern part is mountainous and has dense jungles, slower development of states there

Hope this helps
